Sorry, I'm trying to come up with a solution that works for you. To change the column sizes, take a look at the grid-template-columns property. I'm still stuck at getting the full rows to display in alternate colours properly though, since I can only style the dts and dds, and there is no actual "row" to style. For longer DD's this seems not to work. Flexbox makes this task pretty trivial which is great for developers!

The indenting has been removed, some vertical padding inserted, and the data dl { border: 3px double #ccc; padding: em; } dt { float: left; clear: left; background: #; text-align: right; color: #fff; } dd { flex-basis: 70%.
The only other thing is, it would be nice each "cell" had a border, but I can't see any way that could be done.

All great now. Don't use inline styles, unless you really REALLY have no other option, otherwise, you will end up with a really messy html markup to start with. I believe Firefox keeps a running total of percentages these days and adds all the various elements together so that it is more accurate. This ain't working in IE, would you mind fixing that?

Actually I just though of a way of creating a border between rows. What if we don't want the dt to get half of the width and its width be driven by the length of the text in it. This can be done easily using tables, but I prefer to use dl with flexbox rather than tables for layout.

I have got stuck on how to make the 'rows' wrap to the height of the dt or dd, dl, dt, dd { margin:0 } dl { widthpx; background:red; dt { display:inline-block; vertical-align:top; widthpx; padding:5px 20px 5px 5px;.

Anyway, welcome to StackOverflow, and I recommend that you put those kinds of assumptions in the body of your question, just for clarity.

I assumed column-based shrink and auto would work here, but they do not because the dt and dd are like columns in a single row dl. I recommend adding a clear: left to the dt style to ensure they stay inline even if they need to wrap.

All great now. If you open and close the window now the gap occasionally disappears and sometimes the content drops so its certainly a rounding error with percentages.

Depending on how you style the dt and dd elements, you might encounter a problem: making them have the same height.

Because I have yet to see an example that works for my use case, here is the most full-proof solution that I was able to realize. In addition, I wanted the text to only display to the right of the image, without wrapping under the floated image pseudo-column effect.

I think this is an anti-pattern. Sign up using Email and Password. I really appreciate all your help with this, your CSS Guru badge is well deserved!
